Europe's artificial reef making waves in Britain

Updated 09.44 Fri Sep 05 2008

Europe's first artificial reef has been put off the south coast and could double the size of the waves.

The £2.6 million reef which will be the size of a football pitch is being put off the shore in Bournemouth.

The first section of the base has been attached to the seabed with sandbags and once the rest is installed, it should work like a real reef and push swell upwards.

David Nelson, is the man in charge of the team putting it all in place.

"From the land you wont see very much at all unless there is surf and then you will see a nice wave breaking," he said.

"If you come out on flat days you will be able to come out a snorkel around the reef."

It has taken ten years for the reef to be made and is due to be ready by next summer.
